After a bad
few years, Ireland’s travel trade entered 2011 on a better footing. In 2010 leisure travel in Ireland continued its
decline although business travel picked up in 2010. Travel agents in Ireland have had to become leaner
business although Ireland’s economic problems are far from over. There is no immediate
prospect of consumer spending taking off with Enda Kenny's new coalition government in place and with Ireland still
in the midst of a debt crisis that required international bailouts and tough government austerity measures. The
relative weakness of the Euro also does not help, with increased travel costs due to higher imported fuel
costs and VAT rates.
